Review for Foundation for International Medical Relief of Children, Philadelphia, PA, USA
I have traveled with FIMRC several times. Each trip is a life-changing experience and an opportunity to meet phenomenal people in other parts of the world. I am a Nurse Practitioner and teach a global health care class. FIMRC staff, both in the U.S. and abroad, have been instrumental in helping me plan hands-on service learning opportunities for students in all stages of their collegiate study. I have taken groups to Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic. Each site provides a variety of health care outreach programs for the extended community. The staff at both sites were very willing to allow my students to use their newly developed skills to serve in the communities. We helped to staff mobile clinics and provided primary care to over 100 patients, we walked door to door to provide health care teaching to young pregnant women and families with malnourished children, we helped create materials for public health campaigns, we staffed diabetic and hypertension health care clinics, and we staffed pediatric developmental assessment clinics. During each trip, our group provided 40 hours of clinical service and were able to participate in local events and sightseeing in the area we visited. FIMRC staff gave us great recommendations on where to see the best sunsets, restaurants with the best local food, and where to participate in recreation activities. FIMRC’s work to create sustainable health care outreach in communities was inspiring for us all! I highly recommend traveling and serving with FIMRC!
