I have been sponsoring children through Plan International since 1968. My first child was a little girl in Peru. At that time I was living in Lima...so it was easy to visit her and her family about 4-5 hours north. Since then, I have sponsored many children in many different countries, mostly Spanish-speaking countries. This past summer I went to Nicaragua to visit my "girl." This was my third visit....she will be 18 in October and so will leave the program. I've sponsored her since she was about 6 years old. I also visited my "girl" in Honduras for the second time. She is now only 11. Plan is a phenomenal organization! Actually seeing the work that they do in country and meeting the Plan staff is inspiring. They are very dedicated to all the children in their area...they visit frequently bringing letters and just in general checking up on the kids. When I lived in Peru, there was a massive earthquake off the coast that affected the area where my child lived. It was May 1970 and I happened to have a school vacation not long afterwards. So I went to the area and volunteered as a translator for a week since many people were understandably leaving the area. I had an inside view of how Plan operates...once again it was wonderful to see the way the staff checked up on the sponsored children and helped them in this very difficult time.
