Sandy Hook Promise is an organization that is trustworthy and action oriented. This is one of the few organizations in the country that is actively working to stop senseless gun violence, and other forms of violence. Their violence prevention programs are being implemented in schools and other youth organizations around the country. They worked with lawmakers to craft the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act 2022 and it passed. To date their programs were instrumental in preventing 16 planned school shootings and 284 acts of violence with a weapon. Additionally, 700 confirmed lives were saved with crisis intervention. This is a proactive organization made up of people who sincerely care about changing the culture of violence in America and are willing to work hard to create that change.

I became a promise leader with Sandy Hook promise after the school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas high school. I believe strongly in the way that Sandy Hook promise approaches preventing gun violence. Their violence prevention programs are designed to teach school age children to know how to recognize the warning signs of someone who might become violent and also how to create school environments of inclusion. They additionally advocate for sensible gun laws. They are an honorable organization led by family members who lost loved ones in the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. They have turned their unimaginable grief into purpose and I respect and admire that.

When I decided to volunteer for an organization that took action to prevent gun violence, I researched various organizations. I became a Promise Leader with Sandy Hook Promise because their violence prevention programs are researched- based and have been instrumental in preventing multiple school shootings, suicides and other forms of violence and victimization throughout the country. Their legislative advocacy is strong in advocating for sensible gun laws. It is rewarding to be part of an organization whose members are actively working to prevent violence.

I wanted to honor the lives taken at Sandy Hook Elementary School and so I became a Promise Leader. I believe the programs offered by Sandy Hook Promise are so valuable. The foundation for reducing violence of any kind is when people feel connected and they look out for one another. The researched based, no cost programs that the organization offers will change the culture and climate of schools and other youth organizations. These positive changes will affect communities.
