Review for Doing Right By Rescues, Pennington, NJ, USA
I contacted Pam when I noticed that Merle, the 3 year old wonderful Australian Shepard mix I adopted, became overly excited around young children. She will try to run after them and nip at them, especially around their ankles. Since my husband and I are planning to have children, I wanted to find a way to ensure that Merle does not hurt our baby and also keep her safe around other children.
Pam does not have a fee that she charges those comes to her for help and was extremely helpful when she did initial research for Merle and informed me that she would be putting Merle through some exercises to assess her reactivity to babies/children. Pam then met Merle and watched her natural behaviors and just quietly documented how Merle interacts with her environment. After identifying that Merle is a curious and kind dog who is respectful of boundaries and other things, she presented her with what looked like a human baby. Merle did not react to this child and therefore determined that Merle is not reactive to the size or look of a baby. Pam then provided me with exercises and therapies that I have completed with Merle which have been helpful to get her to relax. Pam instructed me that I should use these exercises prior to engaging with little children. Since meeting with Pam, I have seen an improvement in how Merle interacts with children. She does not bite at them without provocation, which is a major improvement considering how her reactivity scared my nieces very much. She can now be in the same room as children as long as they are not screaming or running and is calm. She still needs work with an escalated level of excitement with children, but we are working through this issue and will be visiting Pam again for another assessment and more helpful support now that we can pinpoint the issue even more.
Thank you Pam and Doing Right by Rescues for helping get our beloved Merle to a place where we can prepare her for our growing family. I have much hope that she will be ready for our baby.
