Review for Grace Hill Settlement House, St. Louis, MO, USA

Rating: 5 stars

Grace Hill Settlement House provides comprehensive and significant outreach to a large sector of St Louis... Recently Grace Hill steerheaded a program to create "idle-free" zones and encourage school bus drivers to turn off their idling engines while waiting for children. Grace Hill also obtained grants to assist in the retrofitting of school bus engines to further reduce dangerous emissions. Members of Grace Hill help local industries in identifying environmental dangers, especially around our waterways (the Mississippi River) to improve our land around the waterways and the waterways themselves. Grace Hill works with the Americorp Trail Ranger Project... cleaning up the St Louis River front and planting native species of grasses to reclaim those areas badly damaged by governmental and private industry. Last year Grace Hill started a grass-roots effort to engage the public and especially our older residents in making their own "green" household cleaners... Their work in public education and environmental clean-up implementation is outstanding.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Cleaning up and reclaiming land around the Mississippi River by planting native species of plants, cleaning up the water in the reducing the amount of chemical runoff into the water by local industry, cleaning up the air our children breath while making their way to and from schoool and educating the public about their opportunities to improve their living conditions.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

advertise the good works done by many volunteers much more.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

Their tireless efforts and energy, engaging both the young and the old.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

were from all walks of live... and all focused on the betterment of the community we live in.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Reach out to greater numbers of people in the area, train additional Rangers (this program changes lives), clean up larger areas of the Mississippi River, engage more industries in their efforts.

Ways to make it better...

funding was not always an issue.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

the constaint hunt for resources... when working to identify and resolve the many community issues should be taking their full attention.

One thing I'd also say is that...

Grace Hill does a wonderful job reaching out in a positive way to both corporations and individuals.

When was your last experience with this nonprofit?

2009

Role:  General Member of the Public & As a general member of the public, I work to support their efforts by sharing their story and hopefully engage more St Louis residents in this "green" effort.
