GOLD PANNING: Gold was discovered in California on January 24, 1848. Most of the gold found was small pieces. Gold miners used science to separate the gold from the sand. They knew that gold was heavier than sand. Gold miners swirled water and sand in pans. The heavy nuggets would be left behind. However, few miners found gold and became rich. Most of the settlers never discovered gold, but they found a new life in California. The settlers helped the U.S. grow. Each student in class Z22 at P.233Q tried planning to find their own '"gold nuggets'". Like gold miners, students swirled water and sand in pan,the heavy nuggets were left behind. What fun thing to learn during the Westward Expansion!
