Review for Save The Strays Animal Rescue & Sanctuary, Camden, SC, USA

Rating: 5 stars

Save-the-Strays is the best way to adopt. Sandra knows each dog and wants to make the best match, not just home a dog. I’m not surprised by the number of wonderful reviews I’ve read. Our adoption experience was over 10 years ago, and Paddy has crossed the Rainbow Bridge, but he remains in our hearts. We had seen this senior cockapoo on line, and when we met him, there was no turning back. Although he was quite old, Sandra had taken the time to make sure he was groomed and looking his best. From this experience, I began to look at older dogs more closely and now as a dog walker/pet sitter specialize in their care. I have learned more about how to accept life from these dear animals than I imagined possible. If you want to be sure your dollars go for a great cause and are handled responsibly, please consider a donation to help this incredible woman continue her work.

Once upon a time there was a woman, Sandra Dollar. I met her eight years ago, having seen the picture of an older cocker spaniel on Petfinder. I fell in love with this sweet senior dog, so my husband and I traveled to rural SC to meet. We pulled up to the address, which looked like an individual’s residence. Surely this couldn’t be an animal rescue, but it was. As soon as I met Sandra, I realized this WAS her residence...she just happened to share it with many special animals waiting for their forever homes. It would never have occurred to her to kennel these dogs, who had probably been through difficult times. Until they found loving owners (and for some that might never happen), they were “ her dogs,” no matter how many there were. There was Paddy (that was the name we chose), freshly groomed and eager to meet us. Sandra did not have to do this. Heaven knows she probably had plenty of vet bills she needed to pay, but she took the time to have Paddy look special. We ended up adopting this sweet dog, and although his time with us was not as long as we would have liked, we knew going in that this was part of the process of adopting an older dog, loving then letting go.

Over the years we have continued to keep in touch with Sandra and support her work. We know she stretches every dollar for maximum effectiveness, and she never complains. I don’t know where she gets her strength and resiliance. I just know that when I become discouraged with the world and people’s bad behavior, I think of Sandra, and I know as long as she lives, I can count on her to remind me that one person really does make a difference. With sincere gratitude for this wonderful organization, it is my pleasure to spread the word of this extraordinary lady and Save the Strays.

It takes a special person to adopt an older dog, and we're very grateful to those who, over the years, have opened their hearts and homes to these special babies. Thank you, Susan, for your care and compassion for Paddy and for your continuing support of our work.
