Review for Soi Dog Foundation, Portland, OR, USA
20 years ago we came to Phuket, staying in the same wonderful resort we are now in. What distressed me so much then, was the number of street dogs roaming & often being badly treated by humans. I never forgot. Not too many years later I read of a woman called Gill Dalley who has started to reach out to these dogs - and cats - to care for them. The result is The Soi Dog Foundation. We support it financially with a modest monthly donation & I wanted so much to visit. So here we are in Phuket for the 2nd time & today we made that longed-for visit. What an amazing place! 800 dogs & 200 cats all being cared for, run by mostly unpaid volunteers, people dedicating themselves to looking after the resident animals. Many come in in poor shape, many have been damaged at the hand of man. Here they receive necessary veterinary care & operations, vaccinations, desexing, baths, meals, shelter & food. The are also mobile Soi Dog units travelling around Thailand desexing & neutering as many street dogs they can find. It is an amazing achievement & this is a happy wonderful place to visit. Some dogs are even adopted overseas - we met a Swiss couple who already have an adoptee from a few years ago. The tour is very interesting & the staff/volunteers welcoming. If you love animals, don’t miss coming here. You have plenty of opportunity to mix with the woofters & puss-cats to your heart’s content. And by the way, this one organisation has made a huge difference to the street dog population - so far, we have seen none. Only 1 stray kitty. And zero government support - all this achieved by donation & the hard work of volunteers, unsung heroes, all of them.
