My name is Sabra Dowdy and I have been a caregiver for my husband since 2004. Until Angelia Wix with Yellow Ribbon Fund invited me to join the Yellow Ribbon Fund group in November 2018 I had not experienced any group affiliations for myself. I was frustrated and sometimes even resentful because day in day out I am 100% involved with my warrior’s daily care. I felt it would be selfish of me to experience fun. After all I am the maid, nurse, cook, chauffeur, accountant. I do cleaning, cooking, washing. I’m administering meds, giving injections, bathing, applying creams & ointments, ordering meds & making sure he takes them on time. I’m driving my husband to his therapy & VA appointments. I pay the bills, I do all the shopping & take the vehicles for maintenance. I make the daily schedule and keep everything running smoothly. I would often have to remind myself my injured warrior was air assault, ( dope on a rope coming out of a helicopter), air bourne, jumping out of planes, a sharp shooter marksman, grenade throwing son of a gun, an infantry man. How can I complain, or feel overwhelmed when he is in chronic pain and unable to do all the things he loves so much? The Yellow Ribbon Fund has shown me I am not selfish in having a few hours that I can be just myself. I can laugh and learn to do something new. I have learned I have value other than a caregiver. I believe our meetings have brought me back from despair & depression. I look so forward now to just a few hours a month for myself to be renewed by being with a group of ladies going thru the same situations. I feel Angelia Wix has given me the ability to come home to my warrior with a sense of peace and tranquility. My husband and I are both wounded and changed forever. We didn’t expect are lives to change so dramatically but I am better equipped to handle our problems with the help of my sisters in the Yellow Ribbon Fund group.
