Review for Environmental and Energy Study Institute (EESI), Washington, DC, USA
Sustainable Bioenergy, Farms, and Forests is one of the relatively few sources of information on energy policy that sticks to facts and avoids ideological campaigns that characterize much environmentally related discussion in the U.S.
As a policy researcher on this subject, I find the difference between European treatment of energy policy startlingly different from that in the U.S., where we have something like a battle to the death between environmentalists and industry. This is a tragedy, because if we did not have our conflict we could be the world leader in the effort to combat global warming. The U.S. in the past stood out for its bold entrepreneurship and ability to do things that other nations did not. But whereas major industries in Europe are critical parts of environmental policy (e.g. Germany, Austria, Sweden, and Finland) our internal conflict has made collaboration between industry, NGOs and government impossible.
