Review for Engaging Creative Minds, Charleston, SC, USA
The fifth grade classes of Carolina Park Elementary worked with Engaging Creative Minds before the holidays and my students are STILL talking about it, wanting to go further with their project we did with Corpus Callosum.
Our ELE Partner, Dave Smith, and ECM Coach Kendall James were very professional, organized, and helpful with this project. We met several times to discuss the project idea, standards to be addressed and sketched out the details of what was needed. The dynamic team helped the fifth grade teachers to create and market a business for a standards rich, rigorous, learning experience. This cross curriculum activity had students create a product, discuss marketing, as well as sell the product to a live audience.
Learning was meaningful because students needed to know the information in order to properly produce the product and make a profit. Our student body created a sea salt hand scrub with the proceeds given to the less fortunate during the holidays. We met with such success that we sold out in less than 45 minutes and had to make more the following week!
The following standards were covered in just one week: Math [5.NSF.2, 5.NSF.1, 5.NSBT.7], Science [5.P.2B.1, 5.P.2B.2], ELA/Writing [2.1.c, 2.1.h, 2.1.k, 2.1.l], Social Studies [5-3.1, 5-3.4], and Art. Besides appreciating maximizing the learning involved, this experience was great for team building. The classroom climate reflected a "Responsive Classroom" atmosphere and all students were involved in the process. I strongly encourage you to try ECM.
