Review for DES Action USA, New York, NY, USA
Like others, mom was given DES in 1955 to stop a miscarriage. I was born with multiple birth defects particularly to my urinary tract and reproductive system. That was only discovered when I was six and continuous high fevers (later discovered to be from infections) sent me into convulsions. By then one kidney was totally destroyed.
Years of corrective surgeries followed, including some where my heart stopped. Then wheelchairs and missed years of school to recover from scar tissue removal.
I was told I’d never get pregnant. So I never thought about it when I married. But at age 33 I found out I was when I was already 5 months along!
The doctor warned she might suffer the next generation effects of DES as well. She didn’t - but my second daughter did.
Luckily, because so much research had been done, she was put on antibiotics prophylactics for her first four years to prevent massive infections while her urinary track corrected.
I’ve had so many other health issues - heart problems, autoimmune issues, scoliosis, that no one else in my family had, I’ve always wondered if any were related.
My whole life was changed because of DES. I am still disgusted no one has had to atone and be held accountable.
So glad I found this group last year.
Review for Sky Island Alliance, Tucson, AZ, USA
Sky Island Alliance has been an incredible influence in our community for the better protection of species in our world. They defend and protect those who cannot speak for themselves by collecting data on the current status of species and the changes to their environment. We are so fortunate that the dedicated staff, care so deeply and work so hard on all of our behalf.
Review for Sky Island Alliance, Tucson, AZ, USA
Sky Island Alliance changed our family's life. We became involved in 2000 and are now devoted environmentalists as a family. My daughter has now earned $93,000 worth of scholarships because of her work volunteering for SKy Island Alliance! They took her under their wing as a young Middle School student, taught her to track, let her adopt remote sensing cameras and allowed her to intern with them. The result? She is majoring in Conservation Biology now. We can never say enough good things about the care this organization gives to its volunteers and the attention it gives to the other species that share our planet.
Review for SARSEF, Tucson, AZ, USA
I became involved in SciEnTeK-12 first as a parent. The organization literally changed my daughter's life -and in the end - mine. Because of her success through science, she attended college for free due to the scholarships and prize money that she was awarded. And as a result, I became more involved in the organization. I wanted others to have the valuable learning experiences and be encouraged just as much as she was.
Now, as a board member, I am proud to represent SciEnTeK-12 and make sure that every student has the same opportunities despite where they may reside. I love that this organization is committed to that as well. They have a vision and nothing compromises that. The kids come first. With no employes and no overhead (offices) they put their contributions right to serving the students. I like that. I highly recommend this organization for its transparency and authentic caring about students.

Review for Society for Science, Washington, DC, USA
SSP is responsible for my daughter's success and for me not paying a dime for her college education! It all started when she was 13 years old and won a trip to Washington D.C. through one of the SSP programs to encourage interest in research. The excitement continued all throughout High School as she attended SSP and Intel's ISEF (International fair.) Due to her involvement, she won so many scholarships that I paid not one dime for her college or expenses. She is now finishing her Master's degree at St. Andrews University in Scotland. SSP is an amazing, quality organization that deserves the highest reviews!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
I have worked with this organization primarily as a parent. However, due to my excitement for all that they have doe for my daughter and others like her, I now am also involved in Science fairs. They made a convert out of me! I now serve on the Board.
If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
No changes, unless it were to be to provide enough funding so that they may expand programs to even more youths!
What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...
watching the amazing growth in students after being involved with SSP and their programs!
The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...
of the highest quality, professional and caring during each and every encounter!
If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...
reach even more students who may be under-represented int eh science and engineering fields and teach all students how to conduct real research rather than just the memorization of facts.
Ways to make it better...
every student were able to have this wonderful experience so I would not feel so guilty.
In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...
that so many students need what they offer and they don't have the funding to expand.
One thing I'd also say is that...
If you only give to one cause, consider this one. It will change the lives of so many children.
How frequently have you been involved with the organization?
About every month
