I am a Masters of Social Work student at the University of Michigan and I completed my first year of field work with Detroit Horse Power's after school program 2018-2019. The transformation I witnessed week after week in the young people we worked with was so heart warming. Time with the horses during weekend barn trips and the hands-on social-emotional learning activites after school helped the youth develop confidence, responsible risk-taking, perseverance, empathy, and self-control. I learned so much from these resilient young people and from the dedicated staff at DHP who supported me in my educational journey. My primary project outside the classroom was assisting with their evaluation work to measure DHP's impact and refining their self-assessment tool for the 2019 summer program. I hold Detroit Horse Power in the highest regard.

I am an MSW student at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and I am placed with Detroit Horse Power for my field placement. I am so impressed by how much the staff care for the youth participants and each other. They work together to build and deliver quality, evidence based social-emotional learning programming to address the needs of each student and help them develop perseverance, empathy, responsible risk taking, confidence, and self control in relation to riding and caring for horses, as well as transferring these skills to life and their futures. I am greatly enjoying my placement with this program, I love our weekend barn visits, and I look forward to supporting these youth and this program going forward however I can.
