Supporting a nonprofit is not like buying a product. How does one evaluate whether they are getting their money’s worth? An organization may support your values, but are they getting results? When I began supporting The American Bird Conservancy some decades ago, my main concern was legal manpower to take on large corporations and governments big and small in relation to the siting of wind turbines and their effect on birds, and ABC has gotten consistent results: sites re-evaluated, protected land acquired, people educated. But ABC does so much more, from glass collision awareness down to the grass roots level of building nest boxes for the rarest of parrots and even taking some of us lucky supporters on guided bird tours personally.
