The American Bird Conservancy is in my mind the most effective general bird conservation organization in the Americas. They have an experienced and dedicated staff and have been in the forefront of conceiving and executing important bird conservation strategies. They partner well with other conservation organizations to achieve the best conservation solution without seeking to claim credit at the expense of their partners. They have very effectively worked in Latina America to secure protected lands for endemic and migratory birds and have innovated by augmenting the protected areas with ecotourist lodges to secure greater funding and greater exposure for those lands and the conservation they promote. They are not afraid to take controversial positions if it means saving birds. For example, their cats indoors program is one that others have not adopted for fear of offending donors but is absolutely essential to prevent the needless loss of millions of birds. They are a lean organization and as a donor you know that your money will be effectively used. They try to persuade but reasoned persuasion fails, they are not afraid to litigate.
