Review for The Hetrick-Martin Institute, New York, NY, USA

Rating: 5 stars

I began volunteering at Hetrick-Martin in January 2009 and was quickly impressed by the scope of their services. They provide counseling and academic enrichment programs to hundreds of youth members and still find the time to provide a hot dinner every weekday. Many of these youth members have encountered harassment and abuse because of their sexuality, sometimes from their own families. Hetrick-Martin provides a safe space for all them and helps get their lives in order whether that means college prep or HIV testing.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

the excitement of an at-risk youth who was accepted to college when that wasn't even an option for him a few years earlier.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

continue to explore social media and reach out to new supporters.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

watching young people blossom when given the opportunity to explore their potential.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

amazing in their dedication to creating a safe, positive experience for the youth.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

expand the number of young people it reaches not just in NY, but across the country by sharing its experience and best practices.

Ways to make it better...

had a clone? Really, there is so much to do I was never bored, but I still enjoyed every moment.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

the economy. Every organization is dealing with the same issue as supporters find themselves with less money this year to support their favorite nonprofits.

One thing I'd also say is that...

Kids are coming out at younger age than when I was growing up. While society continues to change for the better, for the ones who encounter bigotry I'm grateful Hetrick-Martin is there to support them.

When was your last experience with this nonprofit?

2009
