Review for We Teach Science Foundation, Alameda, CA, USA
Remarkable organization whose mission is to inspire and mentor public school students to achieve excellence in math by connecting middle school Algebra students for remote tutoring and mentoring from top-notch, high tech engineers and other professionals that use math regularly. The tutoring/mentoring is done through a web-based, interactive whiteboard and an audio connection, allowing mentors and students the flexibility of connecting from separate locations after school. If you think this might interest you - consider volunteering. This is a fantastic volunteer opportunity for busy professionals - just one hour per week done from anywhere the volunteer has internet access. This growing organization is expanding in terms of the number of schools it partners with. Truly a cutting edge and game changing approach to education. The kids (and the volunteers) will benefit tons.

Review for California Youth Connection, Emeryville, CA, USA
Terrific non-profit organization with a truly important goal: "To promote the participation of foster youth in policy development and legislative change to improve the foster care system, and strives to improve social work practice and child welfare policy." Consider that: - 20% of the US foster care population is in California - Up to 50% of former foster/probation youth become homeless within the first 18 months of emancipation - 27% of the homeless population spent time in foster care - Youth in foster care are 44% less likely to graduate from high school - Girls in foster care are six times more likely to give birth before the age of 21 than the general population This organization, mainly run by ex-foster care youths, is working to improve the odds above. As California residents, as neighbors to these kids, how can we not get more involved?

Review for GAIA Global Health, San Rafael, CA, USA
Having met the founders and looked at this organization's achievements, I believe in this organization and it's mission: The Global AIDS Interfaith Alliance (GAIA) delivers HIV-related and basic health services to rural villages and health facilities in Africa. This non-profit, non-governmental 501(c)(3) organization was founded in June 2000 in response to the global HIV/AIDS epidemic. Currently, it is primarily focused on Malawi, a small country located in Sub-Saharan Africa at the epicenter of the global HIV/AIDS epidemic where 80,000 people die of AIDS-related illnesses each year and over 550,000 children have been orphaned. Through establishing partnerships with local communities, GAIA delivers a variety of life-saving services to people in need with a particular emphasis on women and children. The organization's approach to preventing and treating HIV involves strengthening healthcare institutions, improving the delivery of healthcare services, and working closely with communities to empower local people, particularly women, in the struggle against HIV. It has established relationships with grass-roots, village-level entities and can therefore rely on the local village women to identify and address the needs of those living with AIDS and create local strategies to sustain their services. Also, GAIA is a major supporter of nursing training and education (including at the Nurse Practitioner level) in Malawi.

Challenging GAIA to expand their nurse program to include nurse practitioners which GAIA successfully did.
