Review for Shelter Music Boston, Arlington, MA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

I represent a non-profit that funds small, grass-roots programs started by an individual or group and focused on improving those things in our world that need changing. When I heard about SMB, Julie Leven and those who work with her I knew that I had to meet her and hear the story.
When I met Julie I was not disappointed. Her soft-spoken manner and her passion are immediately evident. She shared with me "that it is an honor to do this work and that despite playing in world-class venues, the shelter concerts rank amongst their favorites." Julie's passion for music coupled with her strong interest in social justice and her compassion were the perfect marriage. They are giving so much dignity to people often forgotten. An absolutely wothwhile cause!

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

There is little I would do to change SMB. It is a small organization and no doubt will remain so. It could certainly be used as a model for other communities and the founder could, no doubt, use some help in the daily administrative tasks but asa a model it is perfect!

Review for AmpleHarvest.org, Inc., Newfoundland, NJ, USA

Rating: 5 stars

As a non-profit ED who has worked with small, grass-roots programs for almost 20 years we knew that AmpleHarvest.org was a winner from the first time we heard about their work. Gary Oppenheimer's vision of eliminating hunger with the help of home gardeners is brilliant. Everything about this program is just right--an accomplished founder with vision, technical expertise, and a palpable passion for others; and home gardeners with the ability and desire to share their bounty with others. AmpleHarvest.org solves the ‘excess supply not being able to reach demand’ problem which has always plagued the country’s food bank system. News reports repeatedly share that this country produces sufficient food to feed everyone; AmpleHarvest.org takes a huge step in making that a reality by organizing a previously under-tapped resource.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

the many reports of successes AmpleHarvest.org has shared with us as the number of registered food banks and pantries grow and as we learn of larger entities that have expressed an interest in partnering with them to expand their reach.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

help them find a significant donor who can underwrite the truly modest budget that the organization requires to continue its work which has far more than modest implications.

Role:  Professional with expertise in this field & We have worked with AmpleHarvest.org for the past year offering them advice and funding for the building blocks they needed to get established.

Review for Home Front Hearts, E Brunswick, NJ, USA

Rating: 5 stars

As the Executive Director of a non-profit organization that is dedicated to small, little known organizations often begun by an inspired and inspiring individual (also known as a "good person")I have years of experience meeting and working with amazing visionaries who identify a need in this world and are dedicated to addressing that need. Randi Cairns, the inspiration behind Home Front Hearts and the good work it does, is one of those visionaries. As the wife of a National Guardsman who has left his wife and children on numerous occasions to serve our country, Randi had first-hand knowledge of the specific problems faced by National Guard families and has worked tirelessly to resolve many of those difficulties. HFH has developed an extensive online database of resources which are accessed by many Guard families. They have responded to specific needs, with the help of donors, when appropriate and Randi spends a considerable amount of time on the phone offering her (own)experience and expertise to those who come to her for help.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

hearing from individuals who have been helped. All are deeply grateful for what HFH has done for them and for the compassion and wisdom the founder has displayed.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

my interaction with the founder and watching her tackle difficult problems with little regard for her own time and responsibilities.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

HFH could improve the lives of many service people and their families with far less than "10 million bucks." If the organization received even modest support, the founder could draw a salary and devote even more time to this mission.

How frequently have you been involved with the organization?

About every week
