Review for Room for Joy, Mesa, AZ, USA

Rating: 5 stars

There are plenty of good causes vying for your donations, but Room for Joy (RFJ) serves a forgotten segment of the population. Chronically ill children and their families.

When a child becomes medically fragile, acutely or chronically ill, continual trips to hospitals are just the first step on a long and difficult road. They need ongoing care, inpatient or specialty services. But when they're not in the hospital, most of them spend the majority of their lives confined to their homes, in bedrooms equipped with machines.

This isolation is terribly difficult.

That's where Room for Joy comes in. Over a single weekend, RFJ will come in and do a “Hollywood level” bedroom makeover for a chronically ill child who is selected as a recipient by a local hospitals.

We create an indoor environment with special attention to the medical, physical and emotional needs of each child. We adding special touches that personalize the rooms and fulfill their dreams.

These makeovers are done starting on a Friday morning and the reveal, like a TV reality show, happens Sunday at 4:00 PM.

To accomplish this, we have to send the families away for the weekend (locally). All expenses paid. This is a BIG deal for them because 99% of the time, these families NEVER get any down time, all their finances and effort go into caring for their child.

RFJ will put the families up in a hotel and pay for activities, etc., and they are instructed to come back at 4 PM on Sunday for the "big reveal.

Says founder, Tory Smock, “When a family is chosen, I interview them, select a date for the makeover and start working on the concept. Once the concept is complete we start constructing things WEEKS in advance, at our volunteer carpenter’s shop. These are not “slap some paint on the walls and add new blinds makeovers” we do everything from maximizing space, to facilitating the concealment of medical equipment so the child can look and live as “normally” as possible.

Room For Joy’s heroic ability to bring children a healing environment at home or in a hospital, depends upon the heroic generosity and support of caring people and organizations. This is where you can step in and be a hero to countless kids for years to come.

Their skill at creating imaginative, healing, fun, child-friendly rooms for kids going through life-threatening illnesses and diseases has proven to bring hope, joy and emotional healing to kids and families struggling with the day to day realities of chronic illnesses.
Hopefully you will never have to endure the emotional and mental difficulty of a chronically ill child. But, with your generous support for this project, you’ll be a hero to those who are experiencing it, now and in the future.

What makes a hero? It starts with a decision and ends with action. Make no mistake, you become a hero when you decide to act and give your loving support. Thank you!

Review for Room for Joy, Mesa, AZ, USA

Room for Joy serves the chronically ill children and their families. This is a segment of the population that is going through something that not a lot of people think about. There's not a lot of top of the mind awareness about what kids like these and their families are going through.

Many of them are isolated and withdrawn from society because of their chronic illnesses. Many are confined to their rooms, most of them don't have friends come over, because they've got a room full of sensitive, if not ugly, equipment.

What Room for Joy does is transform the room from what has often become a scary, boring place into a haven for them... a place that is beautiful enjoyable and reduces stress and helps improve their quality of life in the midst of dealing with their sickness.

The thing that we really need is funds, you know, we need people who can come beside us and support us financially because each room make over costs thousands of dollars.

Not only do we make over the room, we send the family on a local, mini-vacation so they are out of the house foe the two days we need to transform the room. They start on a Friday and then there's a reveal Sunday afternoon.

We do a couple fundraisers during the year, but having ongoing sponsorship and getting our message out there to people who would get behind this is essential to our thriving. Also one of the other things about room for joy does, is it's a faith based organization. At the at the reveal on you know everybody circles up and we pray for the family and for the children.

And I think that's one thing that sets us apart. That's not something that that is overtly pushed to the community, but it's definitely at the core of what we're doing.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Give it a million-dollar donation!
