I have had the joy of knowing and working with Helen for 5 years. She is amazing in her drive and determination to make the world a better place, especially Ethiopia. She is always on the lookout for ways to raise money for the many projects she completes. She is persistent in getting the right people, in the country and cities where she works, to help support her projects.
The library she built in Ethiopia is full of books, computers (the city is supplying the internet), and has a room for primary teachers to conduct read alouds and other lessons. I visited the library early on a Saturday morning and there were about 50 children (from primary though college-aged students) reading, studying, and enjoying the library.She has reopened a well to provide much needed water, helped a hotel owner learn how to prepare favorites (i.e. pizza) in the hotel's kitchen. There are so many other projects that are to be completed. It is obvious that the money raised goes directly to her projects. She has hosted trips throughout Ethiopia using the proceeds for projects and hosted events in the US to raise money.
Helen is a teacher and uses what she learned in her own classroom to help the children, parents, and teachers acquire the skills and strategies to improve students' abilities to read and write.

When in the US, she is also involved in many projects helping children overcome the barriers and challenges to feel safe and to learn. They know with Helen that they have someone who cares and is interested in their lives. She is a role model in what it means to be a citizen of earth and how to look out for each other. It is an honor to know her and to work with her.
