Review for SAVE OUR SEABIRDS INC, Wimauma, FL, USA

Rating: 5 stars

Save Our Seabirds is a fantastic organization dedicated to rescuing birds of all types that are injured, sick, or need care in the surrounding community. They have two sites that care for the birds; one in Wimauma Florida and one in Sarasota Florida. The Sarasota site is a beautiful sanctuary open to the public to view the resident education birds. My time with them has been a wonderful learning experience that has taught me to appreciate the feathered friends we have and how best to avoid contact and causing them injury. I have been part of educational visits for school, church and other community groups. I have also done off site outreach programs to spread the word of the SOS mission. The most fulfilling aspect has been the rescue and release of injured birds. I have personally rescued osprey, cormorants, egrets, ducks, and baby birds of many types. I have also been involved in releasing rehabilitated birds back into their habitats. This was an amazing experience as you see the bird emerge from its transport, stretch its wings and take off. I will remember my time here and the people with very fond memories.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

creating a fulfilling volunteer experience.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Give all of the employees volunteer management/interaction training. They could be a little more volunteer friendly.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

Interacting with the birds during rescue and release as well as the parrots.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Wonderful people who love the birds caring for the environment.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

be the area/state leader for both rescue and oiled wildlife response. Through efforts in constructing a new education building SOS could have the ability disseminate more information to visitors. They could also hire/train staff and pay them competitively.

Ways to make it better...

They staff had volunteer management training.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

The lack of funding for staff salaries and limited room for expansion.

One thing I'd also say is that...

The director is so dedicated to the mission that her home is also a site of rehabilitation. This passion can be taken as hostility but it is only her desire to make sure everything is done properly coming to the fore.

How frequently have you been involved with the organization?
