I was referred to the Starfish Foundation and the Taking It Lightly program 10 years ago, in 2008. I was having trouble concentrating, and was in the midst of a deep dive into the emotional abuse of my childhood and confronting it as an adult so I could move on with my life and with greater joy. This foundation and weekend programs provided me with a community of peers that I could trust. I received education, support, hope and action steps for embracing wellness into my life and appreciating my journey, even if turbulent, rocky and unpleasant. Having this community of people, that have also experienced and thrived from lived experience, has been a beautiful gift to me that I volunteer and give back whenever I can. Now I am a greater distance away and searching for a community like this where I currently live, and there is nothing like it. I volunteer and stay involved whenever I can because the Starfish Foundation helps me feel understood, supported and encouraged to step forward with courage into new unknown terrain in my life.
