Review for My Hero Project Inc, Laguna Beach, CA, USA
It has been one of the greatest blessings of my life to have become involved with the MY HERO Project. Because as an aspiring filmmaker and activist, MY HERO has provided me with mentorship, inspiration, and life changing opportunities to use pursue my aspirations.
MY HERO uses its collection of films, songs, art pieces, and stories about people making the world a better place, to inspire young people like myself to use their gifts leave a positive impact as well.
I deeply resonate with this service that MY HERO provides, because it was through learning about heroes/activists in high-school that I developed my passion for social justice and filmmaking in the first place.
Furthermore, I admire how MY HERO gives youth a platform to have their skills in the arts, and their personal heroes, validated on MY HERO’s website and at their international film festivals. The MY HERO Project accepted two short documentaries I made in 2015 and 2016, in their international film festivals. As a result, I received the “Emerging Artist” award, and an internship opportunity to be a MY HERO youth correspondent .
Through my internship with MY HERO, I received life changing opportunities to develop my skills in filmmaking and reporting. For example, in April 2018, I served as a reporter and filmmaker at the opening of the Equal Justice Initiative’s Legacy Museum and National Memorial for Peace and Justice, in Montgomery, AL. I interviewed civil rights legends like Rev. Jessie Jackson and Bernice A. King (Dr. Martin Luther King’s daughter). Furthermore, MY HERO provided me with the training to edit my film, which I am now sharing with organizations across the nation.
Furthermore, for the past two years, MY HERO has provided me with the mentorship to create a student organization at my university that teaches youth values in global citizenship. The organization is called, Y.E.S. G.I.V.E (Youth Education Supporting Global Involvement and the Value of Empowerment).
I am eternally grateful for the inspiration, opportunities, and support MY HERO has given to me, and to youth across the globe. MY HERO truly empowers us to leave a positive impact on our communities.
