My late husband was chaplain to a psychiatric hospital, he had had previous experience of working with addiction, and was a volunteer at both a national and local level for a mental health charity. He felt deeply about the limitations of treatment for mental illness, and the powerlessness and social and economic exclusion that often accompany a mental health problem. In the last years of his life he came across the early research on psychedelics, including the Good Friday Experiment and the work of Stanislav Grof, and was excited about the future possibility of patients with conditions likely to respond to therapy using psychedelics being freed from long term medication and able to gain control over their lives again. He was not aware of MAPS, but I would like to think that at some level of existence he is rejoicing that such an organisation exists, and that their careful research may soon offer hope to people with a wide variety of mental health disorders.
