Review for Multidisciplinary Association For Psychedelic Studies (MAPS), San Jose, CA, USA
I first heard of MAPS when I was setting up my university's branch of Students for Sensible Drug Policy UK. As someone who, generally, in my life, takes a firm stand for rationalism and against any superstitions/dogmas that stand in the way of humanity's efforts to understand itself and the universe, I can only applaud the tenacity of an organisation that refuses to accept on trust the idea that certain drugs have no legitimate medical uses, and engages in systematic trials to find out whether and to what degree psychedelics can help treat psychological illnesses. Of course, as a long-time opponent of the war on drugs on moral grounds (the idea that someone deserves to be punished simply for one's choice of recreational chemical seems as repugnant as the idea that someone should be punished for their sexual orientation or choice of religion), I must regard MAPS as part of the R&D department of this particular social justice movement, in that it is much harder to demonise people who use a particular drug if that drug has become part of mainstream medicine. I'm just surprised there aren't more organisations doing this kind of work.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
no meaningful sense yet - but I can reasonably predict that when the war on drugs finally grinds to a halt and we all share in the peace dividend, MAPS will have been a major force in making it happen.
