The Ixtatán Foundation is funding and helping to direct a school in a part of Central America that has many, many problems. Despite the large number of issues that confound many organizations that try to help people in foreign countries, however, the Foundation is doing a remarkable job. My time as a teacher was not without its difficult moments; however, it was, I realize now, one of the most important years of my life. I've been back in the States for three years now, and I rarely go more than two or three days without mentioning a memory or a vignette about something I did or learned during my time in Guatemala. The people of San Mateo are some of the most wonderful people I've ever met, and as hard as it may be to cut through the red tape and work through the cultural differences to help them, it's absolutely worth it.
