Review for WeSPARK Cancer Support Center, Sherman Oaks, CA, USA
When my husband was diagnosed with cancer, I had a great support system with family and friends. What I needed and wanted, however, was to talk to others who had a relative or friend with cancer for the purpose of being able to express my own thoughts and fears, as well as to listen to the stories of others, with the hope of learning some practical things I might do,and to be with people who knew exactly what I was feeling. I found all that and more at WeSPARK. The physical setting of the group was a storefront, but once I entered through the door, I felt as if I were sitting in someone's comfortable living room, surrounded by friends who cared about and understood everything I was feeling. Sometimes there were tears, and at other times, smiles, and always compassion and encouragement from each other. What I got from attending the weekly meetings (which I so looked forward to), far exceeded my expectations. I had an immediate sense that I was where I belonged. Because we became so connected to each other, it wasn't always easy to listen to others tell of the setbacks of their loved ones, but we "cheered" when we heard of someone's progress. The leader of our group was Tara Shore who set the tone for the meetings. Tara was an incredible listener, question asker, dispenser of helpful information, with a caring heart. She always made sure that everyone had an opportunity to speak, even if it meant extending our meeting time. The time I spent at WeSPARK was the most helpful and inspiring time during my husband's illness and subsequent death. WeSPARK truly deserves all the accolades and recognition it has received.
