Review for Hospice Of San Luis Obispo County, San Luis Obisp, CA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

I signed up for HospiceSLO's In-Home Volunteer training in 2018 as a challenge to myself to engage in an activity that was outside my comfort zone at the time but that would benefit someone in need of support. The thorough training was exceptionally well planned, prepared and administered and I knew it would prepare me for the duties of an in-home volunteer. I was matched with a client who was a very good fit with my personality and outlook and I have served this person for three years as they declined into deepening symptoms that became more disabling and placed more demands on their caregiver. My weekly volunteer time now serves their caregiver as much as the client.

Later I also enrolled in the equally thorough End of Life Doula training, to gain further skill and insight into assisting a person facing a terminal diagnosis, and their loved ones.

All services provided by HospiceSLO are without charge regardless of a person's financial status, and are available without the strict criteria enforced by medical hospices. This is an amazing service for members of our community dealing with serious or life-limiting illness, especially if they cannot afford the kind of support they need or do not qualify for medical hospice.

I can't say enough positive words for HospiceSLO and the high value its services bring to recipients. All the volunteers and the small paid staff are providing deeply needed care to our lucky SLO County community.

Integrity. Compassion. Love

In April 2018 I enrolled as a volunteer with HospiceSLO and received 30 hours of expert training in the methods and skills to serve In-Home clients with terminal or severely life-limiting conditions. I was matched with a client with Parkinsons Disease who also suffers with multiple additional medical issues. He and his caregiver have often stated to me how much my four hours per week with him mean for his well-being and for caregiver respite. While I am humbled by this response, my own life has been enriched beyond my expectations through this work.

Later, after my positive experiences with the staff and volunteers of HospiceSLO, I enrolled in another intensive training on how to support and advocate for those near death and actively dying as an End of Life Doula. This further enhanced my understanding of the sanctity not only of life, but of the important and sometimes difficult task of experiencing the end of life.

The fact that HospiceSLO's services are offered free, to anyone in need, is amazing to me. Also amazing are the very professional and caring staff with backgrounds in medical, counseling and therapy fields. It is no wonder they have a growing waiting list of potential clients seeking help. At the same time new volunteer trainings are experiencing greater enrollments, which is gratifying to see and will help shorten the client wait list. But........

As I write this review the world is fighting the coronavirus pandemic, which has impacted everyone's lives. HospiceSLO's fundraisers, grants, donations and sponsorships, the only sources of operating income, have dropped significantly as a result. Programs for clients and trainings for willing volunteers have been cut back and some paid staff have been furloughed. Yet the remaining dedicated staff are taking on extra duties and doing everything possible to guide us, as they have since my first volunteer training, with integrity, compassion and love.

The Hospice SLO County staff are a phenomenal group of compassionate and selfless people. They provide training for in-home volunteers and end of life vigils as well as many other services related to end of life and grieving, which have helped many, many people. All their services are provided to the public completely free. A valuable gem in our community.

I am so impressed with Hospice SLO County, especially their professional, caring and friendly staff. I am a retired male in my 60s, and recently completed their very comprehensive In-Home Volunteer training program that opened my eyes to much knowledge that I was unaware of about the serious and important work related to end-of-life issues. The 30-hour training reflects much work and organization and includes numerous expert guest presenters in addition to the very qualified Volunteer Coordinators. The volunteer training manual provided to trainees is very detailed and is an excellent resource for volunteers as they serve their clients.

As a retiree with some time on my hands, another revelation was coming in contact with many other volunteers of all ages with such compassion and commitment to help people in need at such a critical yet vulnerable time. It is inspiring to know there are many such people in SLO County who volunteer but I would not have known if I had not signed up myself. The need for their services is great, and a client waiting list exists until more In-Home Volunteers are trained. Hospice SLO is undoubtedly an under-appreciated resource on the Central Coast and very worthy of all the recognition it receives.
