Review for National Humane Education Society, Charles Town, WV, USA
I am a veterinarian and a PTA mom of two children in the public school system in Brooklyn, NY. After learning about the importance of humane education from a conference for teachers, I wanted to bring the ideas to my children’s school. The principal of the school supported humane education, although I needed to explain why its important when teachers have very limited time to teach what they have as it is.
I had trouble securing a visit from a local humane education organization. I then researched and came across The National Humane Education Society (NHES). They were warm and welcoming from the first email.
I had also wanted a family workshop along with daytime assemblies and approached NHES about it. They were excited and came up with a program. We wanted therapy dogs present and they were able to connect with a local therapy dog group and arrange for dogs to be present at the assembly and the family night workshop.
There were detailed emails regarding everything from the topics discussed to the timing of the activities.
The day finally came for the assemblies and workshop. I was impressed at how the speakers wove messages of kindness, adoption, the needs of pets, into stories and songs. They adjusted their message delivery for the older kids.
The family night program was great too. There were tables with activities for adults and children. The adult table was geared towards social responsibility. The kid’s tables had activities such as making vegan dog treats, making cat toys and a game in which you paired a dog up for adoption with the correct family. We served vegan food for the attendees.
I hope to have the same program for the school next year with NHES. They are wonderful, hard working and I admire them for the work they do.
