Review for Modest Needs Foundation, New York, NY, USA

Rating: 5 stars

Modest Needs helped my son Zayne during a very difficult time. My husband was physically unable to work, and Zayne was diagnosed with autism, along with a neurological condition that prevented him from processing the things he saw. He needed glasses we couldn't afford, and after much searching for help, I found Modest Needs. I'll never forget the day Zayne got his glasses; he was four years old, and he stood only to my waist. As he balanced them precariously on his little nose, he looked up at me with a furrowed brow and said, "Mommy??" It was like he was seeing me—everything—for the first time. That same afternoon, Zayne's occupational therapist came for his regular session, and in an effort to test his limits, she asked him to draw a picture. For most four year olds, this is a regular day-to-day activity, but what you must appreciate is before this day, Zayne had never drawn a picture of anything; he drew only random scribbles in black crayon. This time he drew our family standing in front of our rented house. Now Zayne is in the fifth grade, and though he continues to struggle with autism, he works through long division and writes essays and letters right alongside his peers. I never dreamed that the gift from Modest Needs would bestow such wealth on my son. Six years after Modest Needs funded my request, my family continues to feel the positive effects. I will always be grateful for the generosity of Modest Needs, and it is my sincere hope that my story will help donors understand the magnitude of the work they do simply by taking ten minutes to register and donate.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

my personal life and in my community.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

not change a thing.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

watching my son learn like every other kid. Listening to him read is one of my favorite things to do.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

helpful, compassionate and caring.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

bring hundreds of thousands of people back from the brink of poverty. It could buy dignity, hope, and a better way of life for people who have no other options.

Ways to make it better...

nothing could have improved it. It was the miracle my son needed when nobody else would help us.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

raising enough money to meet the needs of their growing client base.

One thing I'd also say is that...

please give to this organization. It has changed my life.

When was your last experience with this nonprofit?

2009
