My partner and I recently attended the Simonton Cancer Counseling Center's five day program/retreat for cancer survivors and their partners. It was a truly amazing experience! I was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer 12 years ago, with several scary and potentially life-threatening progressions in the last 2 years. The Simonton program and its amazing staff, provided me with many specific tools to live more fully with this disease and to develop skills to harness my immune system through imagery to help me fight the cancer. I brought home many new insights about my health and tools to address issues and beliefs that are potentially holding me back. My husband also benefited hugely from the week, and we both learned some ways to communicate about very tough and frightening issues, both with each other and with our children and other family members. If all that wasn't enough, Karen and other staff members keep in touch with participants, and offer help and support after we go back to our everyday lives. I can't recommend this program enough! I just wish everyone facing the challenge of living a full and happy life with cancer could attend the program.
