Review for The Roberto Clemente Health Clinic, Baltimore, MD, USA
I had the pleasure to spend 4 weeks in Nicaragua working with the Roberto Clemente Clinic. A friend and I recently finished medical school and where looking for an opportunity to volunteer. For starters, you don’t have to be in a medical profession to volunteer. The clinic provides a number of services for the community including water treatment, classes on how to grow and manage a garden, and supply food and clothing to the surrounding communities. If you are worried about the language barrier being an issue, I can tell you that it does help if you speak some Spanish but it is not a necessity. I barely speak any myself but found that a number of the staff members spoke English and were willing to help translate whenever it was needed. Speaking of the staff, they were all incredibly friendly and loved having us around helping in anyway they needed. From a medical stand point, I was able to assist in checking in patients, taking vitals, giving injections, and sitting in on consults. On Wednesday’s we went out into the community for diabetic club, providing medication and counseling at the smaller clinics. We spent some time each week working in the garden and going out to check on some of the 32 gardens they have helped families set up at their homes. I would highly recommend this organization to anyone who is looking to volunteer their time and resources. Seeing what they are able to accomplish with what they have at their disposal is something I will carry with me for a long time. I will absolutely be back in the future to volunteer again.
