Review for The Roberto Clemente Health Clinic, Baltimore, MD, USA
I found out about a volunteering opportunity at the Roberto Clemente Health Clinic through a colleague who had previously volunteered there. Having just graduated medical school I had time to organize a one month trip to the clinic with a good friend of mine from school. Arranging the trip was quite easy and the staff was very welcoming and happy to have us. Our time at the clinic was divided between assisting the nursing staff with patient intake, sitting in with the doctors during consultations and helping the head of agricultural affairs in the Biogarden. The profound impact the clinic has on the patients and the surrounding community is inspiring. Not only do they provide clean water to the surroundings towns via their water treatment facility, they have also helped create approximately 32 smaller biogradens for family’s and individuals in the surrounding region allowing for a healthier lifestyle. I speak basic Spanish which was aided by the helpfulness of the staff. Many spoke English and could help translate when needed. Conversing with the patients and staff helped me further my Spanish development. On our down time from the clinic we enjoyed the beautiful country of Nicaragua. Visited nearby beaches, took surfing lessons and went hiking/horseback riding. Volunteering at the clinic was a tremendously rewarding experience, one I will not soon forget. I’ve made great friends here at the clinic and am looking forward to coming back down as soon as I can. I highly recommend volunteering here to anyone looking give back to a community.
