I joined the Board of Directors of BR Soldier Outreach in the fall of 2017. This group had been functioning under another name for several years and are now a true charitable organization, being awarded 401(c)3 status in 2017. The mission of this organization is to "bless" men and women in the US Armed Forces who are currently deployed. The organization reaches out to these soldiers whose names are sent to the organization via facebook or our website www.brsoldier.com. We then reach out to the individual soldier and ask them what comfort items they would like us to send them. We then enlist the Greater Baton Rouge community to donate "in kind" items such as microwave popcorn, drink mixes, local newspapers or whatever the soldier and her/his unit would like to have. Shipments go out four times a year but in 2018, we are looking to increase our shipments by raising more money to cover the cost of postage as well as purchasing some of the items we send and for publicizing this effort and this charitable organization.
