I know about Defeat MSA because I have volunteered at fundraisers. A friend s brother died of the disease and this friend has been active in working with Defeat MSA to help families combating the disease. The purpose of Defeat MSA is to raise money for research and awareness. My husband suffers from a different rare and progressive neurological disease, so I understand how challenging it can be to explain an often changing situation to people. Polite inquirers generally just want to hear that there's a happy (or at least not wholly bleak) ending when they ask after an ill family member. Increasing awareness keeps families from feeling that they have to put on a false face of optimism. On the other hand, we can find genuine hope in Defeat MSA' s funding of research to eradicate or at least mitigate the condition.
