I am a 70 year old grandmother of three who was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer in November 2016. As I have never been a smoker and overall I am in excellent health, I was totally blindsided by this diagnosis.
My primary tumor was tested and they found that I had a rare mutation which is best treated by targeted drugs as traditional chemo is not very effective. After four months of trying the most commonly prescribed drug, I had to discontinue taking it due to liver side effects even though the drug was effective.
There aren't many options for treating this mutation, but my daughter found a clinical trial phase 2 at a Boston Hospital. I was accepted to participate in the trial in May and as part of the trial protocol, I need to travel to Boston from Wisconsin every 21 days for follow-up and testing. I am happy to say that since I've been on the new drug, my primary tumor continues to reduce in size and metastasized nodes have either reduced in size or are no longer detected on scans.
Even though I feel I had budgeted ample funds to meet my normal living expenses, I never imagined that I would need significant additional funds to cover travel and lodging expenses for a medical issue. This is where Lazarex has been a lifesaver as their support is allowing me to be part of this clinical trial.
