Over the past 5 years, I have gone on over a dozen volunteer trips both domestically and internationally. I’ve worked with 4 different organizations, and I can honestly say that Blanca’s House was the most incredible organization that I have worked with thus far. Being a nursing student, this mission was a perfect fit for me. During the week, I was given the humbling opportunity to assist both nurses and surgeons in various operations to improve the quality of life of our Honduran patients. Our surgeries varied from cleft lip and palate repairs, to gall bladder removals, to hernia repairs. While I was there, I was rotating through the different units of the hospital not just observing, but actually learning how to do some of the basic things that our wonderful nurses and surgeons do on a regular basis. This trip didn’t just allow me to dip my toes in the water - it allowed me to dive head-first into what will be my career as a nurse, and for that I am eternally grateful. The trip made me even more passionate about my ultimate goal in life - to save and help as many people as I can through medicine. By the end of the week, we had done 63 procedures, positively impacting 63 lives who desperately needed our help. Being able to be a part of the team who changed these people’s lives in just a week is indescribable. I am beyond excited to work with Blanca’s House again this upcoming January in Ecuador.
