Review for CentsofRelief, New Haven, CT, USA

Rating: 5 stars

Through Cents of Relief, I have been working in Kalighat, Kolkata (Calcutta) at a center that provides health, education and vocational training for women and children in Kalighat (the oldest red light district in Kolkata). Cents of Relief provides funds and support that provide a tremendous amount of support and compassion for women in prostitution. Despite the large number of women and children in need in the area, there are very few resources to assist them or help them find a path out of sex work and extreme poverty. Cents of Relief's staff and volunteers (and the programs they run) truly provide necessary services where there are few or none.

Since arriving in Kolkata, I have experienced the results of this organization's basic health services program, food distribution for needy children and HIV/AIDS Outreach in the community.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

If I could make changes to this organization, I would like to see their services extended to other parts of Kolkata and more broadly across India.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

The extraordinary enthusiasm and passion that staff members and volunteers bring to their work each and every day.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

The staff and volunteers are compassionate, intelligent and extremely helpful.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Change the way women (and their children) who are trafficked or forced to work in prostitution live. If Cents of Relief had 10 million bucks, they could change the cycle of poverty and exploitation that is all too familiar in Kalighat.

Ways to make it better...

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

a lack of funds to expand and enhance their programs further

One thing I'd also say is that...

the problem of trafficking is not limited to Kalighat - the programs offered by Cents of Relief should be available to every women who has suffered this terrible abuse.

How frequently have you been involved with the organization?

About every week
