There are two great things about NBCF. First, they generously provide funds for breast cancer related services, especially for low-income women, and the process to request and report on funding is simple and efficient. Second, the program officers there (most recently Michael Zenteno, but all have been great) are really responsive and caring. In fact, the entire organization is responsive. They recently contacted current grantees to ask us what else, besides funding for screenings, we really needed. When we responded, our answers didn't go into some "black box" somewhere...they actually got back in touch with us again to ask more questions about our needs. In my 12 years as a grants professional, I have never had a program officer contact me to ask about our needs. In my experience, NBCF is the best example of a Great Non-Profit that I can think of.
