Review for Food For Thought, Forestville, CA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

Food For Thought distributes food to people with HIV and AIDS in Sonoma County, California. Most of the work is done by volunteers. The volunteer coordinator took the attitude that we are all adults; the clients and the volunteers are able to be responsible for their own actions and don't need to be policed. The respect given to clients and to me as a volunteer was empowering. The kindness and caring of the staff and the other volunteers was a big plus for me in working there. The purpose of the organization, feeding people who are ill, was always the priority in getting things done; I never felt like egos or organizational politics got in the way of that. I stopped volunteering when I moved away from the area; I have contributed money to FFT and they are in my will as a beneficiary.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

seeing food delivered to many people, seeing how the funds were applied to services and food procurement, witnessing the positive feelings of the volunteers at the annual picnic for them

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

connect more local sources of food with their program; get more local businesses involved with supporting them; promote more classes in food preparation and nutrition

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

getting to know the people involved and helping those truly in need in a real and concrete way

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

good people, kind, respectful and helpful

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

provide more services to those with HIV and AIDS

Ways to make it better...

i had been able to give more time to it

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

getting funding and donations of food

One thing I'd also say is that...

this organization is making a real difference in people's lives

How frequently have you been involved with the organization?

About every month

When was your last experience with this nonprofit?

2009

Role:  Volunteer & i did date entry, i delivered food to people, i solicited food at grocery stores, and i helped carry the rainbow flag at Pride parades.
