Review for High Fives Nonprofit Foundation, Truckee, CA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

High Fives epitomizes the leading edge of support and reintegration of severely injured athletes. After my injury I was determined to once again ski with my wife and children. High Fives not only supported me with grants for equipment and alternative therapy that insurance would not cover but they also run adaptive sporting events for the community. They provide training, support and engagement with other injured athletes with similar interests that cannot be matched. They have taken me downhill skiing and mountain biking. They have created not just a financial charity but a Ohana, or community, of support and camaraderie that drives recovery.

Two years ago, after 50 years of downhill skiing, I suffered a devastating accident that I was lucky to survive. High Fives really helped take my recovery above and beyond. They purchased equipment for my house, assisted with costs at an activity based therapy facility that is not yet covered by insurance and really encouraged me to get back out on the slopes. I have spent the last two seasons learning to ski on a mono-ski and am now learning to waterski . I am honored to be a part of their community and am inspired by the other members who are also striving to overcome their disability and get back into outdoor sports.

After completing outpatient therapy last year I was still looking for something to help further my recovery as well as get me back into outdoor sports, particularly skiing, with my family. High Fives funded a glider for my home and therapy at Project Walk. My recovery is progressing way beyond the expectations of conventional therapy programs and I was back out on the slopes with my family this winter.
