I have supported Smile Train for several years, not only because it is one of the most efficient charities, but because it gives children a chance at life that they wouldn't have with the stigma of a cleft palate. It is sad but true that people are judged primarily on their appearance, and it is difficult to look past the distortion of a cleft palate. And, if untreated, they cannot speak clearly ... this because they do not hear clearly. So it is not only their appearance that is distorted, but their ability to communicate. I volunteer in the NICU unit of Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, OH, and I hold and comfort children with cleft palates, and see firsthand the difference a surgery such as Smile Train provides can make. This is why I support Smile Train, and praise the doctors who perform these surgeries, wholeheartedly.
