I volunteered for the first time with House of Heroes on New Year's weekend, 2017. It was quite the honor to help the surviving spouse of a World War II veteran. House of Heroes had coordinated with a local church and the youth group showed up in force. My favorite part, however, was not the help that we provided, but the chance for the spouse to share her trials and adventures that she and her husband experienced during World War II and in his continued service afterward. The teens in the youth group caught a glimpse of couple's sacrifices and sense of fulfillment in serving. It left me wondering who was helped more.... I'm very glad House of Heroes makes the connection with the veteran a priority, not just the home repair.
