Review for Foundation for Photo/Art in Hospitals, St. Louis, MO, USA

Rating: 5 stars

My attention was brought to Healing Photo Art upon moving to Italy to study abroad, as it was where I interned for the semester. Upon working with the organization, alas on more of a tech and media side of things, I was able to learn what the organization was and did on a more personal note. Being able to meet patients, doctors, and medical staff at Careggi Hospital in Florence and hear their personal stories and see in person the drastic impact the art makes brought much more depth and meaning to the work I was doing on a daily basis. I was honored when Elaine asked me to become a contributing photographer after talking about our mutual passion for photography and the arts in general. I am a firm believer that the arts have a healing power that is beyond any technology we can develop, and I formerly saw this with the power of music (I am a concert cellist) and now I see it with the photography. To be able to know that patients, families, caregivers, and others in the medical facilities can be brought a sense of calm, relaxation, or simply distraction amidst feelings that can be otherwise quite nerve-wracking and stressful is incredibly fulfilling. If a single person's life is changed for the better due to this, then it is worth every bit of making it possible.

I have worked with the Foundation this past semester as an intern and through doing so, have been provided an in-depth look at the effects it has throughout the world. Through hearing others' stories and especially through talking with doctors in facilities that have undergone a transformation at the hands of the Foundation, I have been given a glimpse into the very tangible effects artwork has on the lives of individuals.

In addition, I am a contributing photographer and I look forward to staying connected to the Foundation in this capacity as the mission speaks personally to me since I am a firm believer that art, whether painting, photography, music, or any other medium, has a profound positive impact on everyone, but especially in this context, those struggling with a variety of medical/mental conditions.
