Review for Saving Mothers, Los Angeles, CA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

I have been working to spread the word about Saving Mothers for more than a year. Saving Mothers works incredibly efficiently and effectively to protect the health of mothers and their newborns. By providing the supplies women and traditional birth attendants need to ensure healthy deliveries, as well as fistula repair services and related care, the organization is addressing the major causes of preventable maternal mortality and morbidity in the developing world. Dedicating every penny raised from donors to these programs, Saving Mothers is already seeing positive results from its initiatives, and has a clear and achievable plan to expand its efforts. What the nonprofit needs most is recognition from other prominent women's and health organizations that can help it extend its reach and channel more and better resources to the women it serves.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

I have seen the feedback from women impacted by Saving Mothers' programs in Guatemala. A concrete number of sanitary birthing kits have been distributed, and fistula repair surgeries have been made possible by the equipment and supplies provided.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Expand the number of countries it is operating in, improve its web-based resources for physicians and others who want to get involved in Saving Mothers, and place more emphasis on partnering with other organizations that have complementary interests.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

Realizing that its efforts to preserve maternal health are not only helping women, but also impacting their children for the better. Saving Mothers has the opportunity to save and improve two lives in every delivery it touches.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Incredibly smart and savvy about how to run the organization to make the biggest difference, passionate about women's and maternal health, tenacious about field work and forging connections across cultures, languages and geography.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Vastly improve the equipment and supplies available in health clinics in developing nations. Making ultrasounds, fetal monitors and prenatal treatments available at these facilities could radically improve maternal health across regions.

Ways to make it better...

My experience is still going. I don't think I would change anything, just work continually to improve existing efforts, marketing operations, and results.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

Lack of funding is a major hurdle. Saving Mothers is still incredibly dependent on the generosity of donors. Also many governments have not made maternal health a priority, so the nonprofit is working to change this mentality.

One thing I'd also say is that...

Saving Mothers really values every individual it helps, and strives to provide not only the supplies to facilitate healthier births, but also the training and the education to establish long-term best practices wherever it goes.
