With an unemployment rate over 3 times the national average for Military Spouses, the effect of the death, or illness, of the Service Member "breadwinner" is not only an extremely difficult emotional loss to the Family, but a potentially devastating financial one as well that can lead to Military Families being thrust into poverty. With high costs for childcare, the risk of homelessness is a real and scary possibility. Thanks to the VFW National Home For Children (NHFC), not only the Children of the Service Member, and Veterans, but also the Spouse have a safe and loving place to go and call home. The community of support is unparalleled. The VFW NFHC gives a hand up, not a handout by offering job and skill training opportunities to help the families attain gainful employment which leads to independent living when they are able to progress to the point where they are able to move out, support themselves, and even buy their own home! Though I have fortunately not needed the service, my wife and I do talk about worst-case scenarios, and it is comforting to know that should something happen to me, my Wife and newborn daughter will have a place they can go and be well taken care of until they are able to regain their independence. Programs like this one are amazing. Knowing that the VFW continues to take care of the needs of military and veteran families is something that is truly a blessing. I know that I cannot purchase the kind of peace of mind I have that knowing the VFW National Home For Children is there gives me. Many of my comrades and their families have been helped, and are now back on their feet and giving back by continuing to be of service to the military community in too many ways to mention. Thank you VFW! You truly do live up to your motto "No one does more for Veterans"! I would add "and their families" to make it even more accurate! Keep doing what you do! NO ONE DOES IT BETTER in my opinion.
