I first became involved with Youthlinc in 2011 and my life has been completely changed ever since. Youthlinc absolutely delivers on its mission to create lifetime humanitarians. The local service I completed with local teen refugees took me completely outside of my comfort zone. It allowed me to create meaningful relationships with people I would have never come into contact with otherwise, and I have been inspired to continue serving with that population to this day. Because of my experiences with local service, I approached the international service component with humility and with a desire to create collaborative relationships based on mutual respect. This is now how I approach all aspects of my volunteer, academic, and professional life. My first Service Year experience flipped a switch inside me: I realized the potential in myself not only to create change for others, but also to seek the personal changes that occur when compassionately engaging with diverse populations.
