Review for OBAT Helpers USA, McLean, VA, USA
I have been supporting OBAT Helpers since I visited the camps in 2016. What makes OBAT so different from other NGOs is the progress they are making to empower the people to get out of the camps, rather than just providing ongoing relief. Personally, when I visited the camps, I saw a huge project in infrastructure that desperately needed support, and I was happy to take that on. We successfully rebuilt the bathrooms in the largest camp, a $22k project, providing sanitation and privacy & dignity for the camp women.
However, since then, I have visited the camps every year and I see the greatest impact through OBAT’s focus on education. The students receive high marks and take their learning very seriously. I believe in 10-15 years the entire community will be uplifted and transformed and we will see generations of families living independent, healthy, successful lives outside of the camp thanks to OBAT’s educational projects.
If you are able to visit the camps, I would urge you to see it firsthand and then judge for yourself. In the end, I hold tight to the belief that we have a duty to help those in need, to use the time and resources that our Creator gave us to pass a good life and have compassion for those less fortunate. By supporting OBAT, I feel that I am accomplishing that goal, and I hope to see hundreds of these families uplifted and successful in my lifetime, thanks to this incredible work.

I have visited the camps of Biharis in the Bangladesh, few times. Every time I have visited I was highly impressed by the work this non profit is doing to empower the poor and non privileged people, is amazing. Especially, their focus on education is really commendable. Although, they do the relief work also in the camp, if there is some emergency/disaster or someone is sick and handicapped but they they believe that relief provides temporary solution whereas, education/empowerment helps in breaking the poverty chain. I wish them all the success in their effort.

I had first visited the camps in Dhaka in 2016 and after that I went over there each year because every visit had generated so much excitement in me, by seeing the success, hope, devotion and determination among the camp dwellers specially the young generation, that I was forced to visit next time, to feel and enjoy the empowerment of this community with the help of amazing work done by the OBAT Helpers. Hats off to all the people working, volunteering, donating, and supporting this great organization.

I went to Bangladesh in Dec 2016. I visited few camps in Dhaka and in other cities as well. No words can define the misery and suffering through which the people in the camps are going through on a daily basis since last 45 years. Be it accommodation, livelihood, medical, drinking water, toilets and bathrooms- each job is an uphill task to perform. It is beyond one's imagination how a family can live in a 8 ft. x 8 ft. space which happens to be their living room, bed room, kitchen and everything. The third generation of camp dwellers is passing through the anguish and pain since last four decades.
OBAT Helpers are doing an amazing job in the camps. They believe in providing the fishing rod instead of the fish. Besides providing basic amenities where possible, this organization is giving hope, dreams and optimism to the people and the major tool which they are using is EDUCATION. It is hard to believe but it is a fact that second generation of the camp residents are completely uneducated due to various facts but there are so many educated people in the third generation. I talked with the school kids, graduate young men and other students and I was impressed by the glow on their faces when they were talking about their future and their goals and aims in life. Definitely OBAT has empowered the community with the feeling that they have not been completely forgotten and they can also achieve all the good things in life like other human beings with the support from OBAT Helpers and using education as a tool.
OBAT Helpers are doing their job in a systematic way while remaining in their means. They have a bunch of volunteers who are from the camps (mostly) and dedicated to the cause.
This is a very brief account of what I witnessed there. There are many stories on each end of the alleys in the camps, stories which are unbelievable. I will encourage all those people who feel for the forgotten to pay a visit to the camps and see the situation with their own eyes.
