Review for Children's Humanitarian International, Sebastopol, CA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

Last year, I was given the amazing opportunity to travel to Kenya for 5 weeks with this
amazing organization.

During CHI Summer Abroad 2016, we were able to work inside CHI Academy's classrooms with the students and teachers. We also got to go play outside with the students after lunch and during their breaks. One of my favorite memories from the trip was the very first day we got to play with the kids. When I walked outside, a little pre-schooler named Yaya came up to me and immediately asked me to pick her up. Of course I said yes, and from that moment I made a friend. Every day she would run to me and hug me. Then we would run around the yard, or we would sing and dance. I also developed a friendship with her sister Stacy. She was so eager to learn and was always raising her hand when her teacher asked a question. She looked so happy and excited to be learning. About 3 weeks into the trip, I learned that Yaya and Stacy’s parents were not always able to afford school costs. Their mom works 6 hours away and is only home Saturdays and Sundays which leaves their dad to be a full time stay at home dad. As soon as I found this out, I made it my mission to sponsor these students. My sponsorship includes tuition, uniform, pays for their school supplies, along with a new backpack. The day that had the biggest impact on me was the very last day. I got to visit Yaya and Stacy's dad to tell him that I was going to be paying for his kids for the whole school year. He looked so happy and thankful. He hugged me and just kept saying thank you over and over again.

CHI Summer Abroad 2016 helped reshape my view of the world and helped me figure out what career I want to pursue. I encourage everyone to get involved with this organization in some way.
