Review for Five Cap Inc, Scottville, MI, USA

Rating: 1 stars

This organization provides people living in poverty with food, rent assistance, heat assistance, tax filing, and other things that are well needed by the community.

Unfortunately the work environment is very regressive. The organization doesn't believe in computers. Everything is still paper because "computers are less personal." In reality, the person filling out the paper application probably couldn't care less.

I was going through 80 lb boxes of paper literally every other day. As an environmentalist, it was frustrating wanting to use my cell phone to save a tree, and then get told demeaningly "this company kills plenty of trees, a few more won't matter."

No cell phones either for no reason, even if it's work related. So much time is wasted running around looking for other people to ask questions. Or calling other offices to ask questions, another giant waste of time vs being able to text. This is because no one I worked with had been there more than 2-3 months, so no one knew how to do anything properly.

I worked in tech support and being able to text my boss or coworkers a question instead of finding them or calling their office was a life saver.

"Clocking in" involves every employee not at the main building to call when their shift begins and call when their shift ends, along with a description of what they're going to do. It's just tedious since there's no online timekeeping system.

The secretary position involves taking phone calls and not being able to leave the desk, while simultaneously involving a lot of work that can not be done at the desk.

The turnover rate is high. The work culture is to work overtime and through your lunch breaks and expect not to get paid for it because you're exempt.

The organization also believes in intimidation and is very demeaning to employees. Turnover rate is insane. I've seen McDonald's with higher employee retention rates than this place.

Checks are handed out. Everyone from various offices must drive to the main office to pick up their check, or sign a special slip letting someone else pick it up for you. Direct deposit is only possible if it's with two local Ludington banks.

It's a shame. If they had treated their employees a bit better I would have been more inclined to continue working there. In the end, the policies and attitude of the company hurt the organization more than they help it.

Oh, and not that this is relevant, but I had tech support skills as the highlighted point on my resume. The director when she interviewed me asked me if i was "any good with computers" which made me think she didn't even look at my resume at all.
